Why Paris?

Freelance Writer and Journalist, Susie Kearley, asked me recently 'why Paris?'. She was referring to my new novelette, Paris Actually. It's a good question, and there are a few reasons as to why I chose Paris.

Firstly, I love Paris and I wanted to set a story there.

Secondly, Paris is regarded by many as the city of romance, and as Paris Actually is about a young woman (Anna) who has unrealistic ideals of romance, Paris seemed an appropriate choice. The whole story isn't set in Paris, but the main segment is, and Paris is where Anna realises how immature she has been - that she has made a huge mistake in leaving her boyfriend.

Thirdly, Anna is a big fan of musicals. She falls for the leading man in the musical "Singing in the Rain" and follows him to Paris. I chose "Singing in the Rain" because I saw a postcard depicting a man leaping in front of the Eiffel Tower whilst holding an umbrella, along with a couple embracing - their umbrellas having blown inside out. The photograph was taken by the photographer, Elliott Erwitt.

Susie, by the way, has very kindly featured me on her blog.
